Breast implant malrotation means a shaped breast implant has shifted from its intended position to another position. Breast implant malrotation can ONLY occur with elongated or tear dropped shaped breast implants. These types of shaped breast implants have a definite axis or orientation that is required for their positioning. They have a lower, wider more projecting half and a narrower, less projecting upper half. An easy way to think of these tear dropped shaped implants is that they resemble an egg. If the breast implant turns to its side then the breast mound has a peculiar look to it. If the woman has lots of breast tissue, this malrotation will be difficult to see, but it she has very little breast tissue then the malrotation can be obvious.
These tear dropped shaped breast implants require very precise placement by the plastic surgeon. These breast implants have textured surfaces to help prevent them from rotating and the plastic surgeon must create a very small pocket to place the breast implant. So these breast implants are designed not to move. Unfortunately over time, these breast implants will often rotate and distort the breast mound. If this distortion is not identified, then the breast skin will be stretched in unnatural areas. This stretching of the skin further contributes to the unnatural or peculiar look of the breast mound.
Usually a woman with these breast implants will have questions about her strange breast shape. This problem requires a second breast implant surgery and the shaped breast implants are removed and new round breast implants are placed. Because the skin can be stretched over time, the nipple positions will also be asymmetric. This is made worse if both of the tear dropped shaped breast implants have rotated in different directions.
