Breast implant shapes used for breast augmentation
Breast implants used for breast enhancement are manufactured in many different shapes and sizes. The two primary shapes of breast implants are round and tear dropped shaped devices.
The round breast implants used for breast augmentation come in different widths and have a corresponding fill range or saline fill volume. Round breast implants also have different heights or projection. This projection determines how far the natural breast tissues will be pushed outward. Round breast implants come in low, medium and high projections or ‘profiles’. The low and high profile breast implants have limited applications in breast enhancements for the great majority of women. The moderate profile breast implants are by far the most commonly used breast implants. The high profile breast implants are designed to have a broader fill range. The problem with these particular devices is that as they become more filled with saline, the narrower the base of the breast becomes. This results in too narrow of a breast with too much projection for most women desiring breast augmentation.
Round breast implants are manufactured with smooth or textured surfaces or shell covers.
Tear dropped shaped breast implants are designed differently than the round breast implants. They are always textured shelled. The round implant only has two dimensions, a projection and a width. Since they are round the height of the breast implant is the same as the width. The tear dropped shaped breast implant has three measurements, the width, projection, and height. These devices are shaped with the most projecting point of the breast implant much lower. The concept is to push out the lower half of the breast more than the upper half. These devices are also wider at the bottom than the top. They kind of look like an egg. The problem with these devices is that they are designed to be placed and then not to move. Unfortunately they do have a propensity to rotate or turn sideways. This will lead to an unnatural shaped breast because the widest point of the breast is now on one of the breast sides and there may be more projection also on one of the sides. These breast asymmetries lead to a second surgery with breast implant exchange for round smooth breast implants.
