Breast shape influences breast augmentation results
A woman’s pre-existing breast shape can have a very influential role in a breast augmentation result. Essentially, the better a woman’s breast shape and tissue characteristics, the better her breast augmentation result should be. Breast implants make the breast larger. Breast implants do this by pushing out the natural tissues, so if a woman has some asymmetries in her breast shape, then she will probably keep some of these characteristics afterwards. Subtle changes or corrections can be achieved with breast implants but it is always helpful for the woman to understand what her breasts look like before her breast augmentation. As seen in the photo library, rib curvatures, breast bone shapes also will influence the breast augmentation result.
A common request at the breast augmentation consult is for the breast implants to significantly narrow the breast bone or increase the cleavage. While there will be improvement in the cleavage, the breast bone is not moved and wide gaps will remain wide gaps after the breast implants are placed. Excessive efforts at narrowing the gap can lead to complications like synmastia, or cause the nipples to point to the outsides of each breast. The inframammary folds also will influence a breast augmentation result, asymmetries in these breast creases will typically persist after the breast implants have been placed.
Women may have very similar shaped breasts or asymmetric shaped breasts. The more similar the breasts look before a breast augmentation, the more similar they tend to look after the breast implants have been placed. Women who understand their pre-existing body and breast shape are usually happier with their results than the woman with false expectations of their shapes. Subtle adjustments can be made in the breast implant positions during a breast augmentation. It is these types of subtle, artistic adjustments that separate Dr. Michael J. Brown’s breast augmentation results from other plastic surgeons.
