On rare occasion there are women who request to have their breast implants removed. Their reasons for the breast implant removal are personal but may be related to their natural breast’s growth, pregnancy related breast growth that remains, or weight gain induced larger breasts. Or she may simply want the breast implants taken out.
Removing breast implants typically involves making an incision and removing the breast implants. This type of removal is relatively well tolerated without any significant down time. Breast implant removal can be made more complex when the woman’s natural tissues are heavy and will sag to an unacceptable level for the woman. In this instance, the woman will require some sort of breast lifting surgery to be performed at the time of breast implant removal. This will usually result in some sort of scar to left on the breast.
The scar tissue that surrounds the breast implant does not necessarily have to be removed. Leaving the capsule does not pos a health risk for the woman. The capsule can be removed if the woman requests that it be removed. If the woman has a capsular contracture or thickened scar tissue, the capsule should be removed. Capsular removal will result in more discomfort post operatively and will also result in more bleeding and bruising. This will usually require a breast drain to be placed. The drain allows for the oozing blood and fluids to be removed from the body and speeds up recovery. The drain will be removed usually within a few days. It should also be noted that breast implants that were positioned above the muscle are more likely to have thicker capsules and require the capsules to be removed. This is also a more difficult case because the breast tissues will be even thinner than the breast tissue of the submuscular position breast implant. This thinner tissue is more difficult to reshape into an aesthetically pleasing breast mound.
